    • Auto Motor Und Sport claims prototype Tesla Model S 'Plaid' is 20 seconds quicker than the Porsche Taycan around the Nurburgring

Take this with a grain of salt as this is a prototype Model S we are talking about here and additionally this is not an official time but an unofficial manually timed run. Tesla sure does seem quite serious about taking the EV lap battle to Porsche.

As you know the Taycan Turbo S holds the Nurburgring production EV sedan lap record at 7 minutes and 42 seconds. German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport says the prototype Model S bested this by almost 20 seconds.

7:23 is the unofficial hand timed number for Tesla. That is... well, incredible. It does not just beat Porsche it crushes them.

This is all great marketing but how about a real test with a real production car? Porsche likely can take a prototype Taycan and run some quick times too. They still hold the production lap record.

Not surprised. Huge power, huge grip, excellent driver. What else do you need to set a good lap really?

Just to throw some fuel on the fire, apparently the record setting porshe was a pre-production model with a cage and non production tyres. Plenty of knit-picking and bitching going on on Reddit. Either way it's amazing to see Tesla's competition now includes Porsche

While a great result for Tesla, its not a fair comparison with the Taycan. I read that the Tesla was stripped and certainly a pre-production drivetrain.

What they did prove, is they have the tech to make a car that will run the whole ring without an apparent loss of power which was what Porsche was hanging its hat on with the Taycan when comparing it against the Tesla.
