    • $139k+ 1100 hp tri-motor Tesla Model S Plaid coming with promise of quickest 0-60 and 1/4 mile of any production car ever

We all know what brought this on. Lucid Air seems to have Tesla scared as their upcoming 1080 horsepower Lucid Air Dream Edition ran a 9.9 @ 144.4 1/4 mile time which takes the crown for the fastest and quickest production EV.

Tesla clearly intends to take that crown back for themselves with the Tesla Model S Plaid:

      • Quickest 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration of any production car ever
      • Acceleration from 0-60 mph: <2.0 s
      • Quarter mile: <9.0 s
      • Tri Motor All-Wheel Drive

Let's assume Tesla delivers and the Plaid hits the road in late 2021. They claim it will run 8-s but that seems unrealistic. Does this mean a 9-second second car? If so, beating a Tesla Model S Plaid with an internal combustion car is going to become extremely difficult. Hell, the Plaid may become the benchmark with the 720S taking a backseat at least from stoplight.

Things are becoming crazy performance wise across the entire automotive spectrum.

EVs will eventually win the cost/hp race. It is inevitable.

The issue is charging and quick battery swap outs. The company I work for used to make electric in California and we had a quick swap battery back that only needed a fork lift to swap back in the early 2000s.

Correct me if I'm off here, but "Quarter mile: <9.0 s" means they're claiming it will run an 8.xx.

Was just about to type this. I thought I’d also read that the physical limit for 0-60 on the street (with street legal tires) was around 2s. Just not enough traction for a street legal car to go faster. I’ll see if I can find the article on that.

I think I read that a while back, but I'd imagine it may only apply to an ICE where you can't feed in the exact amount of torque that is manageable at any given speed.

You're not wrong that is the claim but I'm not sure if it's from Tesla themselves. It seems a bit optimistic...

Booked if I see 9.5 1/4 I keep it , no production car can compete for the money.

Brooks @dragtimes mentioned that he thinks it will be high upper 8s at best. With the weight of the car and tire technology, he cannot see it getting any better. The bulk of the performance will come from power management.

If this thing can do 8s in the 1/4 mile stock we're getting to the point where you should have to have some special kind of license or test to buy one of these, people will actually end up killing themselves by accident.

Tesla seems to be doing a pretty good job killing people “by accident” as it is anyway

Let’s not forget the 520+ miles range rating. If this car will do sub 9s and drive 500+ Miles on a normal day it will break all concepts of what constitutes a performance car

Getting harder and harder to keep up with these things. The nice thing is you know what they have as they can't be modded.

Now instead of a ~140 mile per hour car to beat them comfortably I need a ~150 mile per hour car.

I was assuming they were just stupid and mean <9.9 second 1/4 mile. I am very skeptical that it will do 8s stock...
I will be very impressed if it can but I highly doubt it. We shall see though.

40K more than the performance and there's no visual difference from the 75K version of the car.

How lazy are they, how about a new bumper and wheels.. or just update the body style already

Yeah they should really make it more aggressive looking.

You know someone is going to wrap it plaid.

So do you think there should be a special license or test required to modify a car into an 8 sec car?
