BoostAddict.com is having mixed feelings on this one. The 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning changed the performance game as we know it. A pickup truck was dominating the performance scene. Yes, a pickup truck.
A supercharged 5.4 liter V8 made performance upgrades fairly easy. Lightnings were running incredible times in the 1/4 mile despite the 4670 pound curb weight of the truck.
The Lightning basically laid the ground for the supercharged 2003 Cobra Mustang (Terminator) which left GM and Dodge choking on Ford's dust. Everything changed and forced induction powerplants now dominate the tuning scene.
Well, if you were hoping for a new Lightning maybe with Predator V8 power from the GT500 Mustang you will be disappointed. Many will however be happy that a new Lightning is going to be produced at all.
All wheel drive and dual electric motors will be standard.
Beyond that, we do not know much else about the truck other than it is expected in 2022.
The second generation Lightning changed the game with its power and tuning potential. In the tuning area, the third generation Lightning will not be able to match it but no doubt it will be much quicker out of the box without any emissions.
We'll see what it brings to the table.
